Remembering Korea: “What Do Kimchi, Chocolate Milk, Drinking Yogurt, and Baked Eggs Have in Common?”

So, what do kimchi, chocolate milk, drinking yogurt, and baked eggs have in common? They were some of my favorite snacks in Korea. I could usually pick them up from the local Family Mart (similar to a 7 Eleven back home) near my home.

Kimchi (made by one of my students & given to me as a gift- It was good!)

Kimchi became one of my favorite Korean foods. I liked it as long as it wasn’t too hot. I always preferred the salty versus the sweet flavors.

Berry Drinking Yogurt

I loved the drinking yogurt. Plus, it was the closest thing I could get to the keifer which I loved so much back home. At first, the berry drinking yogurt was my favorite until I tried the kiwi flavored drinking yogurt which was ‘mmm… good’.

Maeil Chocolate Milk

I tried quite a few brands of chocolate milk, but the Maeil brand was my personal favorite. It was not as sugary as other brands and had a more prevalent cocoa flavor with a very inviting texture. Sometimes, I would buy all that were available, whether that was 2, 3, 4, or 8, at a time. I remember I could actually drink about 3 to 4 in a day at times.

Then, there are the wonderful baked eggs. One of the clerks explained the difference in the varieties when I asked about the difference in packaging. Apparently, one is baked over stones while the other is baked by fire. Anyway, I liked both, probably the ones baked over stones just a tad bit more. They were seasoned already, but the ones baked by fire (which sometimes had a milder taste) usually came with a salt/seasoning packet that you could sprinkle on them as you ate. I could eat a pack of these at a time.

Well, these are just a few of the yummy snacks that I enjoyed and remember from Korea. Oh, how I really miss my kimchi!
